What is Sinusitis(sinus) Infection?

Sinuses are little air pockets that are positioned behind your brow, nose, cheeks, and in between your eyes. The sinuses produce mucus, which is a thin and flowing liquid that protects the body by trapping and moving germs away. Bacteria or allergies can sometimes cause too much mucus to develop, clogging the nasal apertures. Excess mucus is common if you have a cold or allergies.

This mucus buildup can thicken and foster the growth of bacteria and other germs in your sinus canal, leading to a bacterial or viral infection. Most sinus infections are viral and go away in a week or two without treatment.

Sinusitis (sinus) treatment most of them doesn’t need any surgeries, sinus medicine enough. After daignosis, doctor will decide according to severity of sinus.

Diagnosis of Sinus Infection

Our Specialist may ask about your symptoms and usually make the diagnosis based on the physical exam. Doctors may feel tenderness in the patient’s nose and face and look inside your nose. Other methods that might be used to diagnose acute sinusitis and rule out other conditions include:

To help with symptoms, treatment focuses on correcting that issue.

Common treatments for symptoms include:

Nasal endoscopy: Your doctor can visually investigate the inside of your sinuses using a thin, flexible tube (endoscope) with a fiber-optic light put through your nose.

Imaging studies: A CT scan provides information about your sinuses and nasal region. Imaging tests may be useful in detecting abnormalities or possible complications in uncomplicated acute sinusitis.

✓ Nasal and sinus samples: In most cases, lab testing are not required to diagnose acute sinusitis. However, when the condition fails to respond to treatment or is worsening, tissue samples (cultures) from your nose or sinuses might help find the cause, such as a bacterial infection.

Allergy testing: Your doctor may advise an allergy skin test if he or she believes that allergies are to blame for your acute sinusitis. A quick and safe skin test can help identify the allergen causing your nasal flare-ups.

Saline nasal spray: It is used to rinse your nasal passages several times per day.

Nasal corticosteroids:

These sprays can be used to both treat and prevent inflammation. Examples include fluticasone (Flonase Allergy Relief, Flonase Sensimist Allergy Relief, others), budesonide (Rhinocort Allergy), mometasone (Nasonex), and beclomethasone (Beconase AQ, Qnasl, others).

Sinus Medicine /Antibiotics

Since acute sinusitis is typically brought on by a virus rather than a bacterial infection, antibiotics are typically not required to treat it. Even if you have bacterial acute sinusitis, it could go away on its own. Before recommending antibiotics, your doctor may decide to wait and see if your acute sinusitis gets any worse.

However, antibiotics might be necessary for severe, advancing, or persistent symptoms. Take the entire course of antibiotics your doctor prescribes, even if your symptoms start to improve. Your symptoms can return if you stop taking them too soon.

Immunotherapy

If allergies are contributing to your sinusitis, allergy shots (immunotherapy) that help reduce the body’s reaction to specific allergens may help treat your symptoms.
